This Chinese jade cong is believed to be extremely old and I need help evaluating the age and value of this piece. It was previously purchased at the antique store in Vancouver in 1980's. I believe it is in perfect condition.

What does this mean?

Hello Klaudia,

Thank you for choosing Mearto for your online appraisal.

This item is a Chinese jade cong, likely dating back to the late Neolithic period and reflecting the distinctive style of the Liangzhu culture. The cong is a type of jade artifact characterized by its square outer section and a circular inner bore, often elaborately carved with symbolic designs. These objects hold significant cultural and ritualistic importance in ancient Chinese history, and they are frequently associated with burial practices, symbolizing the connection between heaven and earth.

The Liangzhu culture, flourishing around the Yangtze River Delta in what is now modern-day Zhejiang province, is renowned for its advanced jade carving techniques and intricate designs. The motifs commonly found on Liangzhu jade artifacts, such as the cong, often include geometric patterns, animal faces, and abstract symbols, which are believed to have held spiritual and cosmological meanings for the people of that era.

Given the absence of accompanying documentation, it is challenging to pinpoint the exact age of this jade cong. However, its stylistic characteristics and the quality of the craftsmanship strongly suggest a link to the Liangzhu culture and the late Neolithic period. The meticulous carving, the choice of jade material, and the intricate detailing of the design are all indicative of the skilled craftsmanship and artistic sensibility of the ancient Chinese artisans.
